High density polyethylene (HDPE) is produced by ziegler-Natta polymerization of organic compounds at medium pressure (15-30 atmospheric pressure) catalyzed by organic compounds. Under these conditions, the polythene molecules polymerized are linear, with long molecular chains and molecular weights up to several hundred thousand. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) is produced by free radical polymerization at high pressure (100-300mpa) and high temperature (190 -- 210°C) catalyzed by peroxides.

Low pressure polyethylene is suitable for making corrosion-resistant parts and insulating parts; High pressure polyethylene is suitable for making film, etc. Uhmwpe is suitable for shock absorption, wear resistance and transmission parts.
